IFAVA - Brussels Workshop: Building National and EU support for Expanding School Fruit and Vegetable Programs |

Purpose: The purpose of this workshop is to mobilize national and EU advocacy activities that will build political support for expanding school fruit/vegetable programs.
The Objectives:
- Countries will share their strategies and tactics for building political support to expand funding for their School Fruit and Vegetable Programs
- Freshfel Europe will provide technical assistance on potential legislative vehicles and successful approaches to building political support
- Countries will discuss the role of public-private partnerships in effective advocacy
- Countries will discuss how to "market for policy purposes" the results/successes of pilot school fruit/vegetable programs
- Countries will develop consistent European key messages and advocacy strategies
- Participants will develop a Health and Agricultural Ministerial Letter of Support to send to the EU Parliament, DG Sanco and DG AGRI
- Participants will prepare to play an active role in the April 17, 2007 EU Hearing "Preventing Childhood Obesity: Expanding Successful School Fruit/Vegetable Programs" Phillipe Binard and Raquel Raquel Izequierdo de Santiago, Freshfel Europe
Group Sessions
Goal: Developing a Strategy for building political support for School Fruit and Vegetable Programs across Europe. The purpose of this session is to outline an advocacy approach for building School Fruit and Vegetable Programs nationally, and how we could develop pan-EU support. Strategies and practical opportunities for networking and projects will be identified and discussed.
Group work: We will work in three groups with the following facilitators:
Group 1: Liselotte Schäfer Elinder Group 2: Karen Lock Group 3: Robert Pederson
Each group will:
- Identify Common Goals between public health and the fruit and vegetable production sector
- How can these actions be translated into a pan- European approach?
- What initial actions should we take at a national level to build support for school fruit and vegetable schemes?
Outcomes: Discussion and formulation of a pan-European strategy Discussion and development of approaches to taking this forward
